Community
Listening first, acting together
In early 2026, a small group of community members in Kampala sat together and asked: “How can we support each other better?” That question became Damera Community Initiative Ltd.
We are new, volunteer-led, and guided by the belief that every person — regardless of nationality, gender, religion or background — deserves a chance to learn, heal, and lead.
Our work focuses on education, mental health, community media, youth empowerment, refugee integration, and peaceful coexistence between refugees and host communities.
A peaceful, informed, healthy and empowered society where every individual has equal opportunities to achieve their full potential.
To empower communities through digital innovation, education, humanitarian action, mental health support, community journalism, advocacy and sustainable development initiatives.
These principles shape how we work, listen, and grow as a community.
Our work is organised around three pillars that respond directly to what the community told us they need.
Through the Damera Radio Project, we expand access to reliable information via community radio, citizen journalism, podcasts and storytelling.
Damera Radio ProjectWe promote mental wellbeing through awareness campaigns, counselling referrals, psychosocial support, community education and open conversations.
Mental WellbeingWe bring refugees, women, youth and host communities together through dialogue, cultural exchange, leadership training and peacebuilding.
Refugees · Women · YouthPractical initiatives we are currently running or developing with community input.
Community broadcasting and digital storytelling platform.
Mental health awareness, psychosocial support and referral networks.
Leadership, entrepreneurship and life skills for young people.
School support, literacy, mentorship and learning materials.
Building peaceful and inclusive communities through conversation.
Using technology and digital platforms to improve education and communication.
Damera was not built in an office — it was built in a conversation. On March 1, 2026, we held our first community consultation at Gion Hotel in Kampala.
Community members, youth, women, refugee leaders and local partners came together to share what they were struggling with and what they hoped to see change. We listened. That day became the foundation of our programs.

We are just getting started, and every step is shaped by the people we serve.
Our work is for everyone who calls Kampala home, especially those whose voices are rarely heard first.
We are still early in our journey, but every program is designed to create these outcomes.
Damera is proud to stand alongside other community organizations, women-led groups, and development networks in Kampala and beyond. Collaboration is how we multiply impact.
We welcome new partnerships with NGOs, UN agencies, government institutions, universities, foundations, private-sector actors, and community organizations who share our values.
Joint programming, outreach, and shared learning.
Policy support, coordination and humanitarian response.
Research, funding, scholarships and capacity building.
Damera is powered by people. We are looking for volunteers who want to learn, contribute, and grow with us. Because we are still building our systems, applications are handled directly by email.
Please send your expression of interest directly to:
